* a full-time position in case that doesn't work out
* research opportunities during the school year
* a part-time position in case research doesn't work out
* a summer internship for next summer, in case grad school does work out
Like any normal person, I hate the thought of being rejected. But you'll never know unless you try. (And unless you do something absolutely horrible, they won't remember rejecting you at all.)
